Welcome to the SpamAssassin Rules Emporium (SARE)!

IMPORTANT: Due to Ninjas being busy with lives, wives & hockey matches, SARE rules aren't being updated.

There is no need to run automated update tools as all they will produce is useless load on everybody's servers.

Any updates will be announced on the SpamAssassin Users Mailing List.

Greetings all! We have created this quick bunch of web pages to help contribute to the SpamAssassin community.

Our main goal here is to simply have a TON of custom rules written by people for SpamAssassin (SA), and to help others learn how to write their own rules. A typical spam may score 3.0 points, but with a few SARE rulesets it will jump to 35.0!

See the Links page for good starting points.

Now a few notes before we get to the rules.

  1. Some of these rules may already be (or will be) incorporated into standard versions of SA. It isn't good to duplicate rules. Just raise the default score.
  2. Scoring is an art! But a general idea is to write many small rules and score them low. Let 10 rules add up to 2 points rather than 1 rule with all 10 things in it scoring 2 points. This will help minimize false positives.
  3. Many spam can be caught using Bayes, and we strongly recommend the use of Bayes in any/all SpamAssassin systems. SARE rules are designed to compliment Bayes, not replace it.
  4. Always run spamassassin -D --lint before making your rule changes live. Typos will kick your butt! :)
  5. (Just in case you missed the last item:) Always run spamassassin -D --lint before making your rule changes live. Typos will kick your butt! :)
  6. It is very important to write rules for your circumstances.
  7. Write some negative scoring rules!!! Example: If you work in a furniture store, then the words furniture, bed, chair, drawer, desk and lamp in an email should be worth negative points!
  8. Phrases are much better then single words.
  9. Don't get too aggressive. Think about how the rule might hit on legit email!
